Abstract
Management of ill-health in the community as a whole requires a community diagnosis which rests on epidemiological information. For this purpose the recurrent uveitis that the cause is not known has been a concern for a long time.
The Behcet disease has not been managed epidemiologically yet in Korea.
This preliminary report about the Behcet disease is in order that we may know the geographical distribution, the incidence, the characteristics of individuals, the recurrent rate with environmental factors, and the therapeutic regimens and its response.
16 cases of questionnaires, 41 cases in the Korean Ophthalmological journal, and 70 cases in the Korean Dermatologic journal, totaling 127 cases of_Behcet diseases have been studied here.
The incidence of this disease is more frequent in male adults from ophthalmological aspects but more frequent in female adults in dermatological aspects.
The frequency of recurrent attacks is twice a month in 62.5% of the questionnaires at the beginning of the onset.
The attacks are related with intake of oily food substances in 50% of the questionnaires. The season related recurrency is strictly more frequent in winter in 87.5% of the questio nnaires.
The therapeutic regimens are not effective to prevent the attacks.
The corticosteroid preparations for this disease are not effective and have harmful responsesto the visual prognosis.
lmmunosuppressive drugs and colchicine may be helpful for the inhibiton of attack.
The prodromal symptoms of attacks are fatigue and headaches in 56.3% of questionnaires: Folk medicines in 75%, body weight control in 68.8%, and diet control in 68.8% have
been tried without any effect on the recurrency.
Referrences for the Behcet disease were compared with this study. The further investigation of these problems should be continued for emancipation of blindness.
